The Bad Gym Coach: Cardio Edition
About this story

A fitness coach who makes students do absurd cardio exercises.

COACH: Now, imagine you are being chased by bees!
ODETTE: Why would we be chased by bees, Coach?
COACH: Bees motivate the legs to move faster, Odette.
ODETTE: I am just running in place; no bees here.
COACH: The bees are in your mind! Feel their buzz!
ODETTE: I feel a lot of sweat and very little buzz.
COACH: Sweat is just the bees' honey leaving body.
ODETTE: That is not how biology works, Coach.
COACH: Biology is a suggestion; passion is the rule.
ODETTE: My passion is currently for a cold glass of water.
COACH: Water is for those who have finished the hunt!
ODETTE: Who are we hunting? The imaginary bees?
COACH: We are hunting the best version of ourselves!
ODETTE: My best version would be sitting on couch now.
COACH: The couch is a swamp that swallows ambition.
ODETTE: I like swamps; they are cool and damp, sir.
COACH: Dampness is for the weak; we seek the heat!
ODETTE: It is already ninety degrees in this gym, Coach.
COACH: Heat is the fire that purges the inner sloth.
ODETTE: My inner sloth is very comfortable right now.
COACH: Wake up the sloth! Make him run for life!
ODETTE: I am running; my legs are just heavy, sir.
COACH: Heavy legs are just weights given by gravity.
ODETTE: Gravity is a very consistent weight, Coach.
COACH: Fight gravity! Pretend you are on the moon!
ODETTE: Moon-walking is not exactly high-intensity cardio.
COACH: It is a psychological battle against the void!
ODETTE: I am just battling my own breath right now.
COACH: Breathe with the rhythm of a galloping horse!
ODETTE: I sound more like a broken vacuum cleaner, sir.
COACH: A vacuum cleans the spirit; you are purifying!
ODETTE: I am purifying my shirt with sweat, Coach.
COACH: Now, jump high and scream like a hawk!
ODETTE: I am not screaming like a bird in public.
COACH: The hawk does not care about public opinion!
ODETTE: I care about the people staring at me, sir.
COACH: Let them stare! They are just jealous of flight.
ODETTE: We are jumping; we are not actually flying.
COACH: Flight is a state of mind and a strong calf.
ODETTE: My calves are screaming for mercy, Coach.
COACH: Mercy is for those who stop before the peak.
ODETTE: I think I have reached my peak at minute five.
COACH: Five minutes is just the appetizer for effort!
ODETTE: I am full of effort; I cannot take any more.
COACH: Empty your tank! Give me everything you have!
ODETTE: All I have left is a slight cough, sir.
COACH: Coughing is just the lungs applauding the work.
ODETTE: My lungs are not applauding; they are dying.
COACH: Dying to the old self! Reborn in the gym!
ODETTE: I would prefer to stay as my old self.
COACH: The old self was a potato; be a diamond!
ODETTE: Potatoes are delicious; diamonds are just rocks.
COACH: Diamonds are forged under extreme pressure, Odette.
ODETTE: You are providing the pressure, and it's too much.
COACH: Pressure is the gift I give to my students.
ODETTE: I would prefer a gift of a small break, sir.
COACH: Breaks are for those who have reached enlightenment.
ODETTE: Then I am far from enlightened, because I'm tired.
COACH: Tiredness is just the ego trying to quit, Odette.
ODETTE: My ego and my legs agree; we want to stop.
COACH: Now, run in circles while humming a song!
ODETTE: Why are we running in circles now, Coach?
COACH: Circles represent the eternal cycle of fitness.
ODETTE: It also represents me getting dizzy very fast.
COACH: Dizziness is just your brain dancing with joy.
ODETTE: My brain is dancing toward a fainting spell.
COACH: Faint into the arms of your own strength!
ODETTE: I will faint onto the floor, which is hard.
COACH: The floor is a mirror reflecting your struggle.
ODETTE: I see a reflection of a very tired woman, sir.
COACH: That woman is a warrior in training, Odette!
ODETTE: A warrior who wants a nap and a sandwich.
COACH: Sandwiches are the anchors of the sedentary soul.
ODETTE: My soul is very anchored to sourdough bread.
COACH: Sourdough is for those who have time to wait.
ODETTE: I have waited ten minutes for this set, Coach.
COACH: Time is an illusion when you are in zone.
ODETTE: The zone feels like a very long treadmill, sir.
COACH: Now, leap forward and bark like a seal!
ODETTE: No way! I am not barking like a seal, Coach.
COACH: Seals are the masters of the aquatic glide.
ODETTE: We are in a gym; there is no water here.
COACH: The sweat on your brow is your own ocean.
ODETTE: My ocean is just salty and making me blind.
COACH: Blindness is just seeing with the inner eye!
ODETTE: I would rather see where I am jumping, sir.
COACH: Trust your intuition! Leap into the unknown!
ODETTE: The unknown is a pile of yoga mats, Coach.
COACH: Exactly! A soft landing for a bold spirit.
ODETTE: I just landed on someone's foot, honestly.
COACH: Now you have connected with another human soul!
ODETTE: I have connected my knee to his toe, sir.
COACH: Pain is the bridge between two warriors, Odette.
ODETTE: My bridge is currently being repaired by ice.
COACH: Ice is just frozen water; it has no spirit.
ODETTE: It has a very cooling spirit on my knee.
COACH: Now, get up and run like the wind!
ODETTE: The wind does not have to deal with gravity.
COACH: Be the wind! Ignore the laws of physics!
ODETTE: I can't ignore physics; I am still heavy, sir.
COACH: Then lift the weight of your soul, Odette!
ODETTE: My soul is light; it's my body that's tired.
COACH: Body and soul are one in the gym, Odette!
ODETTE: Then my one whole self is finished for today.
COACH: One more lap! For the glory of the grind!
ODETTE: The grind has ground me down to nothing, Coach.
COACH: Nothingness is the perfect state for a new start!
ODETTE: I am starting my journey to the shower now.
COACH: Walk with the pride of a champion, Odette!
ODETTE: I am walking with the limp of a seal, sir.
COACH: See? You have mastered the seal's movement!
ODETTE: I hate this class and I hate your bees.
COACH: Love is just another word for intense training!
ODETTE: I love you from a very far distance, Coach.
COACH: That distance is just a challenge to overcome!
ODETTE: I am overcoming it by leaving the building.
