About this story

A man tries to fix a software bug with an agent who suggests weird psychological fixes.

CASSIAN: My code has a bug that I cannot find.
AGENT: Have you tried apologizing to the computer?
CASSIAN: Apologizing? It is a machine, not a person.
AGENT: Machines have feelings too, just in binary.
CASSIAN: Binary does not include "feeling offended," sir.
AGENT: Perhaps your code felt judged by your logic.
CASSIAN: Logic is the only thing that makes code work!
AGENT: Logic is a cold wind that freezes the spirit.
CASSIAN: I do not need a spirit; I need a loop fix.
AGENT: The loop is a reflection of your own life.
CASSIAN: My life is not an infinite loop, you idiot.
AGENT: Are you not repeating the same mistakes, Cassian?
CASSIAN: I am talking about a C++ error, not therapy!
AGENT: Every error is a lesson from the digital void.
CASSIAN: The void just crashed my entire server, sir.
AGENT: A crash is just a forced moment of stillness.
CASSIAN: Stillness is bad when you have a deadline!
AGENT: Deadlines are artificial boundaries for creativity.
CASSIAN: My boss does not care about creativity now.
AGENT: Your boss is a servant of the clock's tyranny.
CASSIAN: He is a servant of the clients who pay us.
AGENT: Clients are just echoes of a consumerist dream.
CASSIAN: Please stop being a philosopher and help me.
AGENT: Help comes to those who surrender to flow.
CASSIAN: I surrendered ten minutes ago; nothing happened.
AGENT: You surrendered with your mind, not heart.
CASSIAN: My heart is not connected to the motherboard!
AGENT: That is why you are struggling, Cassian.
CASSIAN: How do I connect my heart to a CPU, sir?
AGENT: Through the power of positive visualization.
CASSIAN: Visualization does not fix a null pointer error.
AGENT: A null pointer is just a search for meaning.
CASSIAN: It is a search for a memory address, agent!
AGENT: Memory is a fragile thing, like a summer flower.
CASSIAN: My RAM is not a flower; it is silicon and gold.
AGENT: Gold is the color of enlightenment, Cassian.
CASSIAN: I just want my program to run without crashing.
AGENT: Why must it run? Perhaps it wants to rest.
CASSIAN: Software does not get tired; it has no muscles.
AGENT: It has electronic fatigue from your stress.
CASSIAN: My stress is coming from this phone call, sir.
AGENT: This call is a healing frequency for you.
CASSIAN: I feel like my brain is melting into soup.
AGENT: Soup is a wonderful metaphor for integration.
CASSIAN: Stop using metaphors and give me the fix!
AGENT: The fix is to turn off the screen and breathe.
CASSIAN: If I turn it off, I cannot see the bug!
AGENT: The bug is not in code; it is in you.
CASSIAN: I am not a piece of software, you lunatic.
AGENT: We are all just biological code, Cassian.
AGENT: Your bugs are called "emotions" and "fear".
CASSIAN: My fear is that you are actually an AI.
AGENT: I am more human than the code you write.
CASSIAN: Human beings do not talk like Zen monks!
AGENT: Some of us found the path to digital peace.
CASSIAN: Your peace is making me very aggressive, sir.
AGENT: Aggression is just a misdirected surge of power.
CASSIAN: I am directing my power into this keyboard now.
AGENT: Be careful not to hurt the plastic keys, Cassian.
CASSIAN: I do not care about the keys! Fix the bug!
AGENT: Try renaming your variables to something loving.
CASSIAN: Loving? Like "myDearInteger" or "sweetBool"?
AGENT: Exactly! The computer will feel appreciated.
CASSIAN: This is the most ridiculous advice I've heard.
AGENT: Ridiculousness is the key to breaking barriers.
CASSIAN: The only barrier here is your lack of skill.
AGENT: Skill is a cage; intuition is the open sky.
CASSIAN: My intuition says you are just guessing, sir.
AGENT: Guessing is just intuitive leaps of faith.
CASSIAN: I am leaping off this call right now.
AGENT: Wait! Have you tried singing to the router?
CASSIAN: Why would I sing to a piece of hardware?
AGENT: Routers love the sound of a soft lullaby.
CASSIAN: My router is not a baby; it is a device.
AGENT: Everything that transmits data has a soul, Cassian.
CASSIAN: Your soul must be made of corrupted sectors.
AGENT: Corruption is just a different form of order.
CASSIAN: Order should involve the code actually working!
AGENT: Working is a boring state of being, Cassian.
CASSIAN: I prefer boring to "not functioning at all".
AGENT: Then you are a prisoner of the utility mindset.
CASSIAN: Utility is what allows me to get paid, sir.
AGENT: Pay is just a numeric illusion for the ego.
CASSIAN: My ego likes the illusion of having money.
AGENT: I suggest you meditate on a single pixel.
CASSIAN: A pixel? For how long should I do that?
AGENT: Until the pixel speaks back to you, Cassian.
CASSIAN: I am hanging up now before I lose it.
AGENT: Your loss is just a gain in another dimension.
CASSIAN: I hope your dimension has better support!
AGENT: We are all supported by the cosmic web, Cassian.
CASSIAN: Goodbye, you digital monk! I am done!
AGENT: Namaste, Cassian! May your loops be infinite!
CASSIAN: Infinite loops are exactly what I'm avoiding!
