The Tech Support Nightmare
About this story

A grandson tries to explain the internet to his grandmother.

GRANNY: Where is the Google?
KAELEN: It's right there, Grandma.
GRANNY: I don't see any goggle.
KAELEN: It's spelled G-O-O-G-L-E.
GRANNY: Why does it need so many O's?
KAELEN: Just tap the icon.
GRANNY: The little colorful square?
KAELEN: Yes, that one.
GRANNY: It didn't do anything.
KAELEN: You have to press it harder.
GRANNY: I don't want to break it!
KAELEN: You can't break it by tapping.
GRANNY: My phone broke when I sneezed.
KAELEN: That's impossible.
GRANNY: It was a very big sneeze.
KAELEN: Just tap the screen gently.
GRANNY: Like a little bird?
KAELEN: Yes, like a little bird.
GRANNY: Okay... now what?
KAELEN: Now type what you want to find.
GRANNY: I want to find my glasses.
KAELEN: The internet can't find your glasses.
GRANNY: Why not? It knows everything.
KAELEN: It knows facts, not your house.
GRANNY: Then it's a useless box.
KAELEN: It's not useless! Look at photos.
GRANNY: Photos of what?
KAELEN: Your grandkids!
GRANNY: I can see you right here.
KAELEN: Digital photos, Grandma.
GRANNY: Why would I want digital ones?
KAELEN: They are easier to share.
GRANNY: I share with my voice.
KAELEN: That's for people in the room.
GRANNY: Everyone is always in the room.
KAELEN: Not your cousin in Italy.
GRANNY: Maria? She's a loud woman.
KAELEN: You can see her on FaceTime.
GRANNY: Face-time? Like a clock?
KAELEN: No, it's a video call.
GRANNY: I don't want to be in a video.
KAELEN: You just talk to the screen.
GRANNY: The screen will talk back?
KAELEN: Yes, Maria will talk back.
GRANNY: Will she be wearing that hat?
KAELEN: Probably.
GRANNY: I hate that hat.
KAELEN: Then don't look at her hat.
GRANNY: Now we are talking!
KAELEN: Just tap the icon.
GRANNY: Which one? The bird?
KAELEN: No, the colorful square!
GRANNY: This one?
KAELEN: Yes!
GRANNY: It's still not working.
KAELEN: You're holding it upside down.
GRANNY: It works both ways for me.
KAELEN: It really doesn't.
GRANNY: You're just trying to confuse me.
KAELEN: I am trying to help you!
GRANNY: Help me by making tea.
KAELEN: We were learning the internet!
GRANNY: Tea is more important than Google.
KAELEN: I give up.
GRANNY: Good boy. Now, tea!
KAELEN: Fine, but I'm using an app.
GRANNY: What's an app?
KAELEN: Never mind.
GRANNY: Kaelen! Come back here!
KAELEN: Coming, Grandma!
GRANNY: And bring the cookies!
KAELEN: Yes, ma'am.
GRANNY: Now that's a good grandson.
KAELEN: I'm just a tea-maker now.
GRANNY: A very efficient one.
KAELEN: Thanks... I think.
